Welcome to Southside Gifted and Talented Department! My name is Jerri Henley and I am excited to say that this is my 39th school year to spend here at Southside. The first 12 years were as a student. I have great memories from every year I spent going to school here and hope to help my students have great experiences as well. I graduated in 1982 and entered Arkansas College (now Lyon College) where I earned a BA in Elementary Education. I was fortunate enough to be hired and get to return here to teach 6th grade and GT in the fall of 1986. I continued my education at ASU and earned my Masters Degree in Gifted and Talented Education. I am currently in my 27th year teaching gifted students. I am married to Scott and we have two lovely daughters, who both graduated from SHS, and one handsome son-in-law. Shani is a sophomore at the University of Arkansas Comminity College at Batesville and plans to become an Occupational Therapist. Brandi is a 3rd year Pharmacy student at Harding University College of Pharmacy and is married to Brandon. Brandon is an electrician. We enjoy the outdoors and all kinds of sports, especially basketball!
Southside School District begins serving students through the Gifted and Talented Program at the elementary level with whole group enrichment for grades K-3. Students at the 4th-8th grade levels are served through a pull out program. High school students are served in a number of ways including AP and Pre-AP Classes, Concurrent Credit College Courses, EAST Lab and Secondary Content Differentation Classes. I provide services at SES, SMS and SHS as well as coordinate the school wide program.
The areas of Critical Thinking, Creative Thinking, Research Skills, Communication, and Affective Development are emphasized through projects, creative writing, presentations, logic problems, games, and skills practice. The use of technology is incorporated whenever possible. Through the years (K – 12) these areas are introduced, developed, mastered, and extended.
