Middle School Students Go Flying!

On Saturday, May 11, our SMS 6^th graders had the opportunity to take a field trip to the Batesville Airport. On this trip they not only got to see, touch and explore several planes, visit a hanger and find out how planes are worked on, but also got the chance to FLY! 5 pilots were on hand with their small aircraft to take 3 students at a time up in the air, many of them for their very first time flying!

This was an amazing opportunity for our students and we are all very grateful to Mr. Stevens and Mrs. Keller, and to Carl Kemp and Gene Tulberg from the Young Eagles Program, for making it a reality!

SHS Honors CTE Completers at Banquet

The Career and Technical Department honored parents and 41 graduating seniors who completed three Carnegie units of credit in a program of study on April 16. Recipients of the Robert Stevens Memorial Scholarship are Jackson Mead and Nathan Richardson, Agriculture; Jessica Nguyen and Jennifer Wyatt, Business Marketing; and Krysta Beeler and Charity Swaim, Family and Consumer Science. Brody Clark was the recipient of the Melinda Duncan Memorial Scholarship.

Additional completers and their program of study include: FACS – Brooklyn Armstrong, Christa Bolen, Ricardo Chavez, Jessica Garcia, Samantha Garrett, Gloria Hill, Amber Krause, Leah Littleton, Amber Lovell, Emily Pack, Hannah Smith, Zach Sutherland, Charity Swaim, Rebecca Thompson, and Rabecca Wilson; Agriculture – Dustin Brashers, Brandon Bunn, James Chrisco, Trinity Cole, Ethan Cooper, Oakley Davis, Ashley Hurst, Adrianna Jeffery, Austin Johnson, Jackson Mead, Heather Reed, Nathan Richardson, Jesse Seymore, Leah Wallace, and Dyllen Wolfe; Business/Marketing – Tracey Green, Hannah Hess, Jerrad Hooper, Paige McCollum, Devin Reed, Abram Sanders, and Josh Williams.

LADY SOUTHERNER SOFTBALL STATE BOUND

Congratulations to the Lady Southerner Softball team and their coaches for a great season. They are the 4A Conference Champs and Runner-Up at the Regional Tournament. They are competing in the state tournament Thursday at 12 noon. Good Luck to all the players!

Softball Team defeats Farmington 4-1. Will play Ashdown Friday at noon.

HIPPYs Celebrate Reading

Congratulations to the HIPPY children and families. They read 105,428 minutes! For the past 6 weeks HIPPY Program parents have been tracking the amount of minutes spent reading to their preschool age children. To celebrate the families were invited to a Pizza Picnic in the Park following the Mr. Al concert. The HIPPY Program encourages parents to read to their child 15-20 minutes every day.

Southside School proudly presents 43 seniors who have received scholarships for 2013. This represents 45% of the graduating class. Parents, students, teachers, and college representatives were invited to Academic Day Luncheon to celebrate their successes.

HIPPYs Visit Kindergarten

A group of four year old HIPPY children and parents visited the Elementary Tuesday, April 23^rd. Principal, Glenda Mueller discussed starting school and Kindergarten expectations with the families. The families took a tour of the elementary, visited Kindergarten classrooms, and ate lunch in the cafeteria before registering for Kindergarten. The children greatly enjoyed meeting the Kindergarteners and getting to carry their lunch tray in the cafeteria – “just like the big kids”.

SSD Gifted and Talented Program is currently accepting nominations…

The Southside School District Gifted and Talented Program is currently accepting nominations for prospective students who demonstrate high intellect, creative skills and task commitment. Nominations will be accepted for students entering grades 4-12 during the 2013-2014 school year.

Placement is determined by a committee of teachers, counselors and administrators and is chaired by a certified GT coordinator. Screening includes assessment of creativity and reasoning, criterion and norm-referenced test scores along with input from teachers, parents and students. Screening is blind.

Freshman Visit Middle School to Talk About High School Experience

A group of freshmen visited eighth grade classes to give information and answer any questions about high school. Jacob Vanoven, Lupita Reyes, Will Wyatt, Hayden Webb, Kaylee Crowl, Vinston Van, Hayley Reed, Pepper Rutledge, Nate Hammack, and Zac Brogdon spoke about classes, scheduling, clubs and sports to the 2013-2014 upcoming freshmen. The high school students also visited their class mural and found their names that they had written almost one year ago as eighth graders.
