What is the Southerner Academy?

Southerner Academy, an alternative learning environment, is a part of the Southside School District. The goal of the academy is to give students the opportunity to succeed academically, socially and personally by means of an alternative academic environment. Individualized instruction, small class size, alternative means of assessment, the use of technology, and cooperative learning are some of the ways that Southerner Academy helps students achieve their academic goals.

Qualifications

Students must exhibit 2 or more of the following characteristics:

Disruptive Behavior
Increased Risk of Dropping out of School
Personal or Family Problems or Situations
Recurring Absenteeism
Transiton to or from Residential Programs
Abuse; physical, mental, sexual
Frequent Relocation of Residency
Homelessness
Inadequate Emotional Support
Mental/Physical Health Problems
Pregnancy (Father or Mother)
Single Parenting

Placement at Southerner Academy is an honor and is in no way punitive. It provides guidance, couseling and academic support to enable students who are experiencing emotional, social or academic problems to continue to make progress toward educational goals whether it be in the traditional educational system or the GED program.
